The tunes in this set begin with a strathspey. My mother Annie, who is from the beautiful and wild west Mayo Erris region, has always been very in tune with nature and like somany from that region, would often look tothe sky for predicting weather. I have oftenseen mackerel Belmullet skies predicting change and instability …but whatever theweather, it is a rare and stunning area. A strathspey is a type of tune that youwould hear in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia,a region heavily influenced by Scottish and some Irish music. Many years ago my good buddy, whistle/flute player Joanie Madden, and I had the wonderful experience of staying at another great friend, fiddler Natalie MacMaster’s family home in Cape Breton. For a magical few days we became immersed in the amazing world of Cape Breton music and culture…it was quite the impressionable and uplifting trip! Great people, community, family, faith and tradition.

Three reels follow inspired by our family’s faithful tradition.
